Huskies hammer Morton
McGill accounts for four TDs in conference crossover win
After getting blanked by Hinsdale Central 7-0 on Friday, Sept. 7, the Oak Park and River Forest High School football team came into Friday's West Suburban Conference crossover game against Morton looking for a win.
Mission accomplished as the Huskies routed the visiting Mustangs 49-6 to even their record to 2-2.
Sophomore quarterback Jaden McGill set the early tone for OPRF. On the Huskies' opening drive, he completed a 32-yard pass to Trevon Brown on a third down-and-16. The play sparked OPRF as Keith Robinson followed with a 24-yard run to the Morton 4-yard line, where McGill took the ball in for a touchdown on the ensuing play. Henry Darrow's extra point made the score 7-0 Huskies at the 7:46 mark of the first quarter.
McGill added a second touchdown run later in the quarter, this one from seven yards, increasing the OPRF lead to 14-0. A 54-yard end-around run by Brown set up the score.
After doing damage with his feet, McGill dominated the Mustangs some more with his arm in the second quarter. He connected with Brown on a 10-yard touchdown pass and then with Craig Shelton on an 11-yard touchdown toss.
The Huskies extended their advantage to 28-0 at the 4:47 mark of the second quarter.
McGill gave way to reserve quarterback Toby Kunkel. The junior signal caller, who started several games last season, threw an 8-yard TD pass to Nazareth Bryant. Darrow's fifth PAT gave the Huskies a 35-0 lead.
Triun Green's recovery of Morton quarterback Allen Miramontes' fumble early in the third quarter set up Robinson's 17-yard TD run. After the extra point with 10:12 left in the third made it 42-0 Huskies, the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.
Morton managed to get on the board late in the third quarter when Antoineo Harris Jr. scooped up an OPRF fumble and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. The Huskies led 42-6 after three quarters, and Sean Barney's 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter accounted for the final score.
McGill had a stellar and efficient night for the Huskies, completing 10 of 13 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 45 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. On defense, Michael Tomaso recovered a fumble, and Korean Shanks had an interception for OPRF
The Huskies' next game will be Homecoming against Proviso West on Friday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
