Approaching a new year and the second half of the season, the Fenwick High School girls basketball team has to feel good about its accomplishments in 2018.
Over the Christmas break, the Friars (16-4) won three of four games at the 36th Annual Komaromy Classic hosted by Dundee-Crown High School. Fenwick finished in third place with a 47-37 win against highly regarded Rockton Hononegah. Sophomore Lauren Hall led the way with 15 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals as Fenwick established a 21-15 lead at halftime en route to victory. Defensively, Fenwick held the Indians to 30 percent shooting and caused 14 turnovers.
In the semifinals, New Trier edged Fenwick 40-37 as the latter kept it close despite shooting 25 percent from behind the three-point arc and 35 percent overall. Fenwick actually lead by five points in the fourth quarter before the Trevians rallied to beat the Friars for the second time this season.
Previously, New Trier topped Fenwick 43-38 at the Trevians’ season-opening tourney in November.
In the rematch in Carpentersville, freshman Audrey Hinrichs scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds for Fenwick, while senior Gianni Ortiz added eight points including a pair of 3-pointers. New Trier shot 50 percent on treys.
In yet another close game, the Friars topped Stevenson 49-46 in second-round action. Fenwick led 29-23 at halftime, however trailed 39-36 at the end of the third quarter. Fenwick outscored the Patriots 13-7 in the fourth for the comeback victory. Hinrichs (16 points, 9 rebounds) and Hall (12 points, 2 steals) paced the victors.
Fenwick cruised past South Elgin 53-40 in its tourney opener. The Friars led 18-5 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back against the Storm. Junior guard Lily Reardon (11 points) made three straight 3-pointers in the first quarter to set the tone. Hinrichs scored a team-high 13 points.
Maine West defeated New Trier 50-23 in the championship game. The Wariors (18-0) won the Komaromy Classic for the third straight year, while the Trevians fell to 13-4 this season.
The Friars kick off 2019 with games against host Montini on Friday, Jan. 4 (5 p.m.) and against Fremd at Benet on Saturday, Jan. 5 (2:30 p.m.).
The team then returns to Oak Park to host Resurrection on Tuesday, Jan. 8 (7:30 p.m.) and St. Ignatius on Thursday, Jan. 10 (7 p.m.).
