Union Church in Hinsdale is holding a benefit concert Sunday, Dec. 15 for former First United Church of Oak Park Senior Pastor Julie Ruth Harley, who was diagnosed last year with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Harley was associate minister at Union Church, before leaving for First United in 2008, said Melissa Mann, who is helping organize the event.

"She was an incredible minister at Union Church in Hinsdale. She touched a lot of lives,"

Mann said. "We were all very sad when she got the call to go to First United Church in Oak Park."

Mann said Harley, a single mother with two daughters, entered hospice care a few weeks ago and requires 24-hour supervision from five caregivers.

The band Joyful Noise will perform Christmas songs at the free event "Tidings of Comfort and Joy:

A Benefit Concert for Julie Ruth Harley" at 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Mann said all donations made at the concert will go toward Harley's care.

Mann said those who cannot attend the concert but would like to make a donation can do so through Julie's Fund, attn. Gaby Gleason, Union Church, 137 S. Garfield, Hinsdale, Ill. 60521.
