Last year, roughly 1.6 million juniors from 22,000 high schools took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which gains them entry to the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program.

Only 1 percent, or roughly 16,000, of those 1.6 million students qualified as semifinalists by having test scores that are among the highest in their respective states. This year, OPRF High School announced that 12 students are national semifinalists while Fenwick announced that it has six.

"National Merit semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 scholarships worth more than $32 million, which will be announced in the spring," according to a statement released by OPRF.

OPRF's semifinalists are: Grace Ciacciarelli, Grace Farnham, Natalie Guarino, Maeve Heflin, Lydia Heinig, Ethel Mendius, Alexandra Muehleisen, Erica Ramos, Scott Smith, Sophia Sordilla, Jacob Spangler and Christian Steinhofer.

Fenwick semifinalists include: Matthew Augustyn, Thomas Bartecki, Paul Cederoth (of Oak Park), Jacob Mazur, Skye Ozga and Jack Vomacka.
