I vacation in a beautiful spot on Lake Michigan near Frankfort, Illinois. My boys take the position that a retired person can’t really take a vacation. Fair point. But the place we stay has no TV and cell phone service is limited, so it is a vacation from the Information Age I live in the rest of the year.

Upon my return not much was going on. The national news featured stories on a sinkhole that swallowed part of a resort, but no one died or was even injured. There was another big story on a baby panda born in a zoo. This was probably a big story in the panda community, but less so for homo sapiens.

Closer to home, it looks like the Village’s next big event is this weekend’s big beer blast “Micro Brew Micro Waste”. I understand “micro brew”, but not so much”micro waste”. Is that a reference to the size of the portable toilets or the dribblings of senior citizens. I would not use “waste” in promoting an event.

I was looking forward to hornet killing season, but so far the cool weather seems to have reduced the population. There is something deeply satisfying whacking a hornet with a wiffle ball bat. I feel like Sox slugger Adam Dunn who strikes out a lot, but blasts lots of home runs.

There was complaint that a bedding store might move into the old Marshall Field building. Most everyone thought that this was a poor use of such a great spot. Maybe we should vote on what should go there. The alternative of course is the prosaic one of a willing seller and a willing buyer reaching an agreement in the marketplace. That hardly ever works.

August is Latin for “summer has gone on long enough.” Time to get back to school, pick apples,  fire pits, sweaters, fall colors , and most important of all– Bears!
