Holding Baby Ava

By John Hubbuch

The world is a frightening place. The future is uncertain. Sometimes I think the best that we can hope for is that things will get worse slowly. The failed Japanese nuclear plants continue to pour toxins into the air and water. The Congress argues over how much money to cut from programs that benefit poor people. And we're killing Algerians to stop them from killing other Algerians. Skepticism bleeds into cynicism into pessimism.

But then on Sunday morning I'm holding in my arms Ava,my new grandchild. She's 12 hours old. She's red and a little beat up---a reminder that our entry into this world is hard. She's so tiny. It is hard to believe that she will become as big as Lily her 2 year old sister , let alone a mother someday. For now she seems content to look around and just take in her new  world. It's a beautiful place.

Mr. Hubbuch; Are you reading the papers and looking at TV? Where did you get the stupid idea that Algerians are killing Algerians? Or are you simply typical American who does not the slightest idea about the other countries? O. Cakars

Congrats, Mr. Hubbach. I'm sure you will be coaching her in soccer in just a few years.
