Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts proudly recognizes one of its own!  James Y.H. Yu, OPRFHS, 2009; Vanderbilt University, B.S., Economics & Spanish, 2013, and MD candidate, Warren Albert Medical School at Brown University, 2019, has been selected to receive 1 of 10 nationwide Fellowship Grants from the Doris Duke Foundation, along with honorary funding from Brown University.  Mentored by Dr. Wael F. Asaad, MD, PhD; Yu will conduct research in the Project titled: "iOS Tactile System in Parkinson's Disease: Quantifying Progression of Motor Dysfunction through integration of Touch Technology". The fellowship gives Yu the opportunity to build knowledge and research experience towards his chosen specialty of Neurosurgery.

"His education in Oak Park laid the foundation for lifelong learning and a passion to discover in our son," recalled his father, GrandMaster S.H. Yu.  Following the untimely death of his birth mother, James came to Oak Park at the age of 9, speaking only Korean, and immediately was taken under the wing of the capable District 97/Holmes ESL teacher, Mrs. Sarah Bingaman.  From there he studied and practiced Martial Arts through college, achieving his 5th Dan Master's Title, teaching and practicing his skills at Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts.  "The diverse environment and curriculum at OPRFHS and the Dojhang gave James the education, socialization, and leadership skills to confidently pursue and discover his strengths.  It is truly a testimony to what discipline and focus ultimately add to your lifetime aspirations. We are grateful for the lifelong support of our community, really our extended family", said GrandMaster Yu.  "Not only our own son, but everyone who walks through our Dojhang doors and has the willingness to pursue excellence and service to others has been, is, and will be a success.  We are so proud of James and all our students, of every age, who to this day, remain the purpose of our work," added James' Mom, Dojhang Manager Elizabeth Wilson Yu.  "It truly gives credence to the phrase, "It Takes a Village", to raise creative, caring, and confident citizens", said Wilson Yu.

Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts is proud to call Oak Park Home, raising generations of successful citizens through traditional martial arts training since 1994. The purpose of the business has remained, which is as a Premier Martial Arts Education Center, promoting Martial Arts as a Lifestyle, to improve the health, longevity, enjoyment, safety, and personal awareness of the practitioner, whatever the age. Classes are offered daily, Monday through Saturday, for children, youth, teens, adults.  All Instructors are taught exclusively from the ground-up by GrandMaster Yu, are all certified by Kukkiwon, The World Tae Kwon Do Federation, and pass rigorous quarterly testing to attain high standards of excellence.  You can contact the school at:
