We are having a grand time growing mushrooms in our house this winter.   The "kit" by Back to the Roots, can be purchased locally at  Green Home Experts and retails for $19.99.   We are on our second mushroom kit. The kids are eating mushrooms, having a great time harvesting and altogether super excited about fungus.

The oyster mushrooms take about a week to start to appear and then seem to grow exponentially. My son and daughter can look at the box in the morning and see a measurable growth from the mushrooms by night. The kit is pretty economical too. We harvested about $25 worth of mushrooms the last time and I fully expect the same result this second time around. Actually, I expect better results because we have mastered how to manage the moisture level. We keep a spray bottle next to our mushrooms and mist it at least twice a day. The spray bottle adds quite a bit to the mushroom fun for my 3 year old.

Truly the whole experience inspired all kinds of indoor gardening this winter. We cant wait for spring and plant season to come. This year I'm going to try and pick things that might transfer inside when fall hits.
