High school basketball hasn't exactly needed a pick-me-up over the years. The frenetic energy of the game has been maintained despite the presence of a shot clock and it seems as though it will remain that way for a while.

An odd set of events led to the brief firing of Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School track and field coach Don Robinson on Friday, a day before his team competed in the state sectionals. But after a meeting with District 97 Superintendent Albert Roberts on Monday, Robinson was reinstated to the position.

Back in 1998, I started attending the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, with Brian Piper, a fellow member of the Oak Park Runners Club. Piper is an Iowa alumnus who used to hang out with the track guys in college.
