The attorney for Heather Mack, a former OPRF High School student who awaits trial in a Bali jail for murder, has had limited access to her Chicago-based attorney, according to a news release.

Michael Elkin, Mack’s attorney, released a statement Thursday noting that “there have been some recent issues with respect to police authorities” not allowing the 18-year-old to speak to Elkin and his staff.

“I am hopeful that the police station will continue to allow her to communicate with our office as it will prove to serve in everyone’s best interest, during the pendency of the investigation,” Elkin said in the news release.

Mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, an OPRF graduate, are being held in a Bali jail for the alleged murder of Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack.

von Wiese-Mack was bludgeoned to death on Aug. 11, while on vacation with Heather and Schaefer. Her body was found in a suitcase that had been loaded into a taxi by Heather Mack and Schaefer.

“The investigation continues at the present time, and it is our hope that the selected local defense lawyers will assist the police in their investigation in the immediate future,” Elkin’s said in the news release.

The release also noted that for reasons he is unable to disclose, Elkin and his staff are still in the U.S., “coordinating with experts around the world, with respect to Heather’s representation and health concerns.”

Within the last week, local and international news sources have reported that Mack is pregnant and has claimed she was sexually assaulted while in jail.
