A gunfight erupted near the corner of Austin Boulevard and Madison Street on July 21 at about 11 p.m., leaving one man hospitalized, according to Oak Park police.

Ladon Reynolds, commander of investigations, said in a telephone interview that the gunfight started when a man and woman, possibly a husband and wife from Maywood, were leaving the currency exchange at 2 Madison St.

As the two entered their vehicle, an armed man approached and announced that he was robbing them.

“At this point the offender and the male exchanged gunfire,” Reynolds tells Wednesday Journal. “They then proceeded eastbound on foot.”

The man attempting the robbery was shot and later located by police at West Suburban Hospital. Reynolds said police were interviewing the couple when the hospital called police and reported that the wounded man was being treated for his injuries.

Reynolds said police are still conducting a preliminary investigation of the shootout, but noted that they have both men in custody. The alleged offender remains hospitalized, but his wounds are non-life threatening, Reynolds said.

“Our preliminary investigation leads us to believe that it’s not a random act, and these individuals were specifically targeted,” Reynolds said.

Police are not yet releasing the names of the three individuals involved, but Reynolds confirmed they are all adults.

“We don’t have all the details and nobody has been charged at this point, and we’re sorting it out,” Reynolds said.

The woman involved in the incident is not in police custody, Reynolds said.
