Wednesday Journal has covered local news in Oak Park and River Forest since 1980 and is one of four publications under Growing Community Media, NFP. From reporting on village board meetings to unearthing smaller community stories larger publications don’t dedicate resources towards, the Journal serves as the area’s journalistic watchdog.

In 1980, with the old Oak Park News floundering, Haley turned down the job of Lively Arts editor at the Pioneer Press/Oak Leaves. Instead, along with his founding colleagues, Anne Duggan and Sharon Britton, they rounded up 65 locals to invest in the notion of an independent local newspaper.

A few months later, the Journal published its first issue on July 31, 1980. It has turned into a staple of the community over the last forty years and plans to be maintain its presence in Oak Park and River Forest for the next forty.

As the Journal built up a passionate readership and garnered recognition for the hard work the staff puts in every day, Dan Haley decided to make a transition to a nonprofit model in 2019 as steady revenue waned.
