A high school theater stage might be a strange place for Monty Python’s Spamalot musical to be performed, with those many four-letter words and all. But Oak Park and River Forest High School pulled it off July 20 when students performed it during their summer musical season.
Adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical debuted on Broadway in 2005. It includes racy numbers and more than a few swear words. OPRF’s theater department solved that problem by switching out the cuss words with less-racy alternatives, like “poo” and “crap,” for example.
The alternative words were considered as funny as the originals, according to audience reactions. We agree. Just go tell a buddy how full of “poo” he is and see what reaction you get.
Here’s another one: “Go tenderize yourself, you little sock in the inch.”
